A council investigation into one of the city’s most popular riverside roads has revealed a bicycle lane, speed humps and a lower speed limit could be on the cards.
Burke Drive in Attadale is a favoured route among Perth drivers and cyclists, given its immaculate view of the city skyline and Swan River.
But there were 18 crashes among the 2.7km stretch between 2020 and 2024, half of which left people requiring medical attention or hospitalisation.
The City of Melville’s recently completed traffic warrant assessment indicated intervention was recommended and its director of environment and infrastructure services says a further study is the only way to determine which traffic calming measures are most appropriate for the popular road.
“We’ll be looking at all options in accordance with the recommendation and consideration will be to look at all the traffic calming measures that are suited to this location and that may not involve the installation of speed plateaus or speed humps,” Mick McCarthy said.
“We’ll be looking at the cycling movements in that area ... we’ll look at whether it is viable to include a cycle lane within Burke Drive and that could actually result in some traffic calming, but we’ll just have to look at what the study comes up with.”
The investigation comes after the City of Melville received a petition in February signed by 64 residents requesting council action over speeding and noisy cars and motorbikes that use the road.
At its most recent meeting, the council agreed a detailed traffic study over the next 12 months, including community consultation, was the next step to help identify suitable traffic calming measures for Burke Drive.
Its findings are due to be presented to the council next May.
